The Wasatch Mountain Range extends from southern Idaho and Wyoming into central Utah. The Range is identified as the western edge of the Rocky Mountains. The name Wasatch is derived from a native American tribe that settled in that region. The Wasatch Mountains receive massive quantities of snowfall each year. Resorts such as Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird receive more than 500 inches annually. This snow, considered by many to be “the world’s greatest snow,” has a dry, powdery texture because of the combined effects of low relative humidity in wintertime and the “lake effect” from the Great Salt Lake. The lake effect is produced during winter when cold winds blow across warmer lake waters picking up water vapor that freezes and is subsequently deposited in the mountains of the Wasatch range in the form of snow. As a result, the snow, called “champagne powder” falls in storms that can “dump” as much as 3 feet within 24 hours and creates the optimum skiing conditions.
During the summer months, hiking is a favored activity. Within Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons there is an extensive network of trails that lead to mountain lakes, peaks with stunning vistas and beautiful forests. One can even hike between the resort towns of Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird. Brighton makes an excellent central location to explore the Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.
