Snowbird Oktoberfest 2010

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Only a few more weekends of Snowbird Ski Resort’s Oktoberfest 2010. With fall colors at their prime, now is the perfect time to take a weekend drive up the canyon and enjoy music, dancing, traditional german cuisine, kids activities, and shopping for the holidays. Enjoy concerts in the Oktoberfest Halle, located in the Snowbird event tent.

DATES: August 21-October 10 – Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day

TIME: Noon-6 p.m.

COST: Admission is free

How did Oktoberfest begin?

In 1810, King Ludwig I of Bavaria dedicated a fall harvest festival, named Oktoberfest, on the occasion of his Royal Bavarian Wedding of that same year. Tradesmen and merchants came from all over southern Germany to sell their crops, sing, dance, and sample the first beer of the season. Beer! The most important part of the festival. It was such a success that a royal decree was issued making every Oktoberfest a yearly occasion.

And when did Snowbird begin celebrating Oktoberfest?

Thirty eight years ago, two German immigrants wearing leather lederhosen, came to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort to play their accordions and sing their fondest German songs. Oktoberfest at Snowbird is 17 days long and attracts over 50,000 visitors making it one of the largest festivals in Utah.

With only 4 weekends to go, don’t miss the good time. Upcoming concerts in the Oktoberfest Halle:

Alpenfolk

October 2-3
Salzburger Echo

For those with children, kids 7 and under ski or ride free any day or night all season long at Brighton Ski Resort.

Solitude Mountain Resort has over 1200 acres of lift accessed terrain. The resort has 65 named trails, three bowls, and acres of groomers. Fundraiser for Fishermen Affected by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill

Fundraiser for Fishermen Affected by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill

Great day to be in Big Cottonwood Canyon at Brighton Ski Resort. The was a party with live music and great weather and people .  The five bands that played included StoneFed, Blotto, Scenic Byway, Drunken Masters, and Kristin Diable from Louisiana.  The other four groups are from Utah, Stonefed from Moab, Blotto and Scenic Byway from SLC and Drunken Masters from Clearfield.

The charity that served as our primary benefactor was Gulf Relief Foundation, founded by New Orleanian David Freedman, the general manager of WWOZ radio station in New Orleans.

We were pleased and thankful to have sponsorships from Brighton Resort, Budweiser, AlphaGraphics, Danksquad, KRCL, and the Canyon Inn.

The money raised ($1,000) will all be donated.  I think that the amount of people in attendance throughout the day totaled closed to 200.  Brighton employees as well as others in the local community contributed hours of the time as well as ideas.  Todd Nierny and Beverley Stachowiak did an awesome job coordinating ideas and contributing their free time.

The Gulf relief foundation was formed to help local fisherman in the Gulf Coast region who are being overlooked and under-compensated from the effects of the oil spill.

Spring Skiing in Utah is Alive and Well. And it’s a Blast.

Blue Bird Powder Alert. 7 feet in 7 days.

This has been an incredible week at Brighton and Solitude Ski Resorts. For those of you thinking about tennis and golf, get your mind out of the gutter. Spring skiing is one of the most exciting activities of the year. Warmer weather combined with prime snow. It does not get better than this!

We have some serious powder to deal with up here in Utah. I have to admit my arms and back are so tired from shoveling paths to our Brighton and Solitude ski rental homes that I just want to trek through the doors and right into the hottubs.

Wondering if the snow is still good in March and April? Yes, an energetic YES! Call us today and experience the greatest snow on earth (in April no less): 888.236.0667.

Great Western Lodge

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Deborah and Doug Ballard from Nashville, TN, were recent guests of our Great Western Lodge. They spent a memorable Valentines day with dinner and a sleigh ride in Heber.

Here is what Deborah had to say about her experience at Great Western: “The sleigh ride and dinner was very nice; we had a delightful time. The ride was a bit shorter than I expected, but it was fun. We went to a place called The Homestead actually in Midway UT right before you approach Heber. (The sleigh rides are through Rocky Mountain Outfitters) It is a resort built around the hot springs. The people were very friendly and welcoming. The dinner was excellent and at $68.00 per person for the dinner and sleigh ride, it was a good deal. The drive is a bit further than I would want to do in bad weather, but we didn’t have any problems.”

For more information on Rocky Mountain Outfitters, visit them at RockyMtnOutfitters.com or call 1-435-654-1655.

Paul our Snow Remover Brighton Utah

Paul our Snow Remover Brighton Utah

This is a picture of Paul our snow removal guru. He has been busy these past few days. We have had 38 inches in the past 48 hours. And I think Paul has gotten a meager 4 hours of sleep in those same 48hours. Make sure you give him a friendly wave as he drives by you sitting cozily in your warm cabin at Brighton Ski Resort, Utah

Who is Jay Aldous?

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

My name is Jay Aldous and I’m married to Adrienne Aldous, owner of Mount Majestic Properties. If I do my job well, you will never meet me. Why’s that you ask? We’ll, I’m the shadow shoveling two-feet of the “World’s Greatest Snow” away from your door in the wee hours of the morning, the abominable snowman character on the tractor clearing your driveway, the fleck of green that just sailed past your window as I get carried off your roof by an avalanche of snow in an effort to clear it. My job is throw, move, push, lift, melt and heave the 500+ inches of snow that Brighton Ski Resort receives each year.

It’s days like today when I get to enjoy and celebrate this frozen moisture we call the “World’s Greatest Snow”. Today I was first in line on the Millicent Quad and enjoyed several speed runs on perfectly groomed corduory (freshly groomed snow looks like corduroy). On my second run, I rode up the chair with Randy Doyle, General Manager of Brighton Ski Resort and got all the latest news including that Brighton has the best ski conditions currently of all the Utah resorts including Park City, Alta and Snowbird.

After enjoying the morning skiing Brighton, I was ready to skate ski at the Solitude Nordic Center. Currently the upper and lower Redman loops are open and it felt good to be on my skate skis for the first time this year. After an hour of skating – I was pooped – but already looking forward to skating again tomorrow.

More snow is expected Tuesday. Fingers crossed and I can get my snow removal chores done before the lifts open and perhaps I WILL see you on the Millicent Chair at 9:00 am.
